UMSA has asked for the recreation of the school newspaper (formerly known as PULP - this name is not required).

At this current stage, there is an active search for nearly anyone willing to write or do any other work for it. This includes areas like:

- writers (reporters, feature writers, subeditors, columnists, critics, etc - even novelists and poets - basically anyone who wants to write)

- designers and artists (designers, photographers)

- finance and law consultants (sponsor-finding and overseeing contracts - business and law students preferably)

Noam Chomsky's first public reflections on the Obama election victory and the wider implications.

I liked the fact that the Obama campaign was awarded a marketing award.

Guns 'n' Roses actually releasing their long-awaited album Chinese Democracy, perhaps?!

Rumour has it that the well-known Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. made a promise of a free Dr Pepper to everyone in America if the new album was released before the end of 2008. Unfortunately when they said everyone, they didn't mean everyone; ex-band members Slash and Bucket head have been excluded from this once in a lifetime offer, not that they will be losing any sleep over it I imagine!

My Best Friend's Girl

Nov

I just went to see My Best Friend's Girl (with my girlfriend, not of my own free will) and it was pretty good, I thought.

Basically, the main character has a lucrative scheme in which he behaves despicably to women who have recently broken up with men, in order to make them run crying back to their ex's when they see the difference between the 'hand' and the 'bush' (as the protagonist puts it).

Sports Personality of the Year

Nov

As the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards take place next month, it is time to observe the candidates who have been nominated.

Whilst most people's minds will be fixed on Formula One's youngest rookie World Champion, Lewis Hamilton and athletic Beijing Olympics swimming double gold medallist, Rebecca Adlington, the competition on the 14th December, allows the chance for other rival characters to make a formidable charge for the prize.

Spanish Civil War documentaries

Last night I watched two of the documentaries on www.youtube.com. There are five, apart from the 'prelude to tragedy' which Tim suggested. If you are fed up of reading then i recommend these, they give a good insight into the historical context of Spain in this period and are really interesting.

The rows of pic ‘n’ mix sit proudly in their containers, the array of stuffed toys smile on the shelves and the Christmas music sings through the store. However, it is possible that this will be Woolworths last Christmas.

Mumbai under attack

Nov

If you havent been following, the event started late last evening. Essentially: a major terrorist attack with car bombs, squads with automatic weapons and grenades - coordinated attacks on (mostly luxury) hotels, hospitals, theaters, railway station and others, all in different parts of the city.

Several important heads of agencies have already been killed, including the anti-terrorist government agency. Reports are of already 87 casualties, with about 240 injured.

Reportedly terrorists havebeen filtering out hostages with American and British passports. There are even hostages from the European Parliament and major TNCs, who were there for meetings.

India has already seen an increase of terrorist attacks recently - however, the attacks have generally been remote attacks with bombs. This is a major event, as there are now coordinated groups with objectives and major assault weaponry.

A huge setback to the worldwide policy of anti-terrorism. Reporters are already comparing this event to the 9/11.
